- Eight grade students at a Title I middle school in Philadelphia. Anti-gay hate speech has been a severe issue in our school, and has resulted in violent outbursts, depression and self-harm amongst other things. These kids already have enough working against them and our schools have yet to make absolute equality a priority. So, as an educator, I made it my own goal to *educate*.
We started Project Equality a few weeks ago and have about 25 photos now; they're posted in the hallways of the middle school, and the students and I are already noticing a difference. More students want to be involved in 'the cool pictures' so they have to come and be part of the discussions before they can have their photo taken. Hate speech anywhere in the building is being tolerated less and less by the kids as they take more and more responsibility for the world in which they live and the right to dignity and respect of all people.
They're proud of themselves as they find their voices and grow less fearful of social repercussions, and I couldn't be more proud myself; these are thirteen year old, inner city kids. And they're doing *this*.
