North Carolina Joins Marriage Equality Battle
Monday, September 19th, 2011Gay and Lesbian couples in North Carolina found themselves the latest targets of anti-gay ideology this week as the state Senate approved placing legislation on the May 2012 ballot that would amend the state's constitution to ban same-sex marriage (Huffington Post). Not only would the amendment deny same-sex couples the freedom to marry, but the discriminatory legislation would bar any sort of legal recognition of unions besides those between one man and one woman - including civil unions and domestic partnerships. These basic human rights should never be up for a vote.
How can you make your voice heard? The NOH8 Campaign has announced its upcoming open photo shoot at North Carolina Pride in Durham, North Carolina later this month. On September 24th, we'll be setting up our mobile studio at Duke University's East Campus and giving the opportunity for North Carolinians to add their faces to the fight for equality.
More details are available on our event page here.
By using these images to familiarize would-be strangers to the cause, a chance is created for there to be dialogue and discussion about equal rights. We hope to see all of you there. Let people know who you are, and where you stand!
You can also make your voice count by remembering to register to vote, which you can do in just a few quick minutes through our friends at Rock The Vote by (click here!).
